Sunny Day
November 27,09 45 degrees with a breeze. Moxi found a rooster pheasant 5 minutes into the hunt but I wasn't able to make the shot. We found 4 hen pheasants sadly we had to let them go.
Moxi had a very nice point on a grouse which I was able to bring down after wading thru ice cold water to get to her.

Late Summer Training
Today during a late summer early fall refresher Moxi established point in some heavy cover. I went in, couldn't find anything so I had her relocate, she came around me and reestablished point I began to search a bit seeing nothing but smelling skunk. Though I never saw the skunk my pants and boots received a coating of that pleasant scent of skunk.
Moxi went on to find several birds.
Kira on the other hand well she does a little better each time we go out....

Feathers, Fur and Quills
Monday May 4, 2009 The old dog Xena now 10 got to go for a work out about half way through her work out she was reminded the value of holding her point.
In Xena's younger years she broke on a pheasant and now carries in her 11, 20 gauge 7 1/2 shot lead pellets too deep to dig out. Xena shows no ill efects from either the lead or the quills. Xena is truly a hard core hunting dog even yet at 10 years old.
Not only do red setters hunt they do it for years

Win for Red Setters
Friday May 1st Minnesota Bird Hunters Association hosted the Izaack Holton Classic in Milaca Minnesota. Moxi ran in that and made it through without being disqualified. Moxi had four finds a back and a stop to flush. Moxi didn't place but I was satisfied with just making it through the course. Placements went to white dogs.
The supporting stakes were held on May the 2nd and Moxi was victorious with a first place win in the "Open Shooting Dog" Stake, where she had 5 finds a back that was out of the pages of Field and Stream , two stop to flush
Aside from being a bit on the windy side it was an excellent weekend a cool breeze and warm sunshine, the grounds held enough water that the dogs were able to keep cool yet dry enough noone really had to get their feet wet. The quail flew well and there was several awesome dogs!

A good work out
Moxi had an excellent find today it almost sounds like one of those tall tails.
While out for some brushing up before the next trial I noticed moxi caught wind of something, head up and a little zizg zag and she was off I thought she scented a deer I whistled her but she ignored me something she normally does not do and them she was out of sight. I waited a minute whistled her again she didn't show so I began walking the direction I last saw her after about a 300yd walk I saw her in a thicket on point, I walked in and about 20 feet in front of her I flushed a woodcock. It was an extremely windy day so the wind was to her advantage in this case I guess but it was so windy I didn't think the scent of a bird hunkered down in a thicket would travel a line like that. It was as if the dog was being pulled on a string right to the bird all that distance.

a bird dog yet
I keep telling myself I'll make a bird dog out of her yet. Kira is way behind schedule at age 4 she's at a derby level. It's taken me this long to figure her out. I had to leave her behind since I had Moxi that showed much more promise.
Kira has those days when she looks like she's got it all together and quite litterally the very next day be clueless. Kira needed maturity and recently begun to show she's ready. Kira is otherwise a smart gentle dog that is a pleasure to have around and will retieve all day.
Now that Moxi has a few wins to her name I thought I should now give Kira a shot at some more competition

Remington the red setter during an early spring training session 03/20/09.
Remington is owned by Bruce Konold of Eagan, Minnesota. Remington is out of bearcat lines. Remington is a big boy but is very light on his feet, well gaited and has a great nose. Remington is inexperienced in the field but displays a great deal of natural ability.
